Chapter

Fourteen

Cathy stepped out of the house and motioned for me to join them, but I was already on my way toward the house.

Over the headset, I heard voices crackling, reporting in as each outbuilding was secured.

I shoved the night vision goggles off my eyes as I made my way up to the small porch at the front of the farmhouse.

An odd scent hit me as I pushed into the living room. It was like the smell of fur and sharp moonlight, a scent that went straight to my back brain and made me want to hunker down and hide.

It was like nothing I’d ever smelled before, and yet somehow, I instantly recognized it as dark, primal, dangerous.

It was the smell of wildness.

Werewolf.

I’d never felt anything similar coming from Bentley, so it’s not like I had any previous experience with it, but the more I dealt with monsters—paranormal creatures, I reminded myself. It’s not like Bentley was a monster, after all—the more I was beginning to realize that humans were wired to recognize the danger lurking in the night.

I followed the sound of voices down the short hallway and into an old-fashioned eat-in kitchen, with dark-paneled walls and a long trestle table taking up half the room.

There, Bentley stood in front of three men down on their knees, and two other PN SWAT team members, Officers Woods and Hadley, held guns trained on the men.

I knew instantly which of the men on the floor was the alpha.

He was in the middle, and he glanced up at me as I walked into the room. I nearly toppled over—something about his gaze hit me like a physical fist to the stomach.

His eyes were pale gold, and they caught the light the same way Bentley’s did.

Like an animal’s.

He smirked at my reaction, and Bentley stepped in between us, turning his back on the alpha to face me.

“What am I supposed to be looking for?” I asked quietly.

“I’m not sure,” Bentley said honestly. “I want you to take a look around and see what jumps out at you.”

“I’m hoping nothing jumps out at me.”

He laughed. “Jumps out at you figuratively, not literally. I’m hoping nothing jumps out at you literally too.” He paused, his expression turning serious. “Just remember what we talked about—tell me whatever you come up with.”

I nodded. “The one in the middle is the alpha.”

Bentley nodded and stepped out of my way.

I moved in closer to the row of human-form werewolves on the floor.

The alpha held my gaze and a slow smile spread across his face.

A long scar ran down one cheek, like he’d been in a knife fight. Or more likely, a wolf fight.

“So you’re the new Chosen One,” he said, a rumble under his voice sounding almost like a growl.

Somehow, I knew instinctively that this man had spent too much time in wolf form at some point in his life. He’d almost lost himself to his wolf side.

I took another step toward him, holding his gaze.

I let myself relax, trusting Bentley to make sure I didn’t come to any harm.
